I'm Ready to Move

I came home from church yesterday to find this on the street in front of my house.

I wanted to sneak a picture as he was riding around, but once he saw that I had my camera, he just rode up to me and wouldn't leave me alone. Since I wasn't mean enough to him and his sister, I became the center of everything they want to do while they were outside of their house.

Him and his older sister love me for some reason and I can't seem to get rid of them. These kids picnic in front of my house in the summertime. They knock on my door twenty times a day and occasionally even walk into my house without an invitation.

Despite everything I just said, they are not bad kids. They just seem to want all my attention at all times. However, tonight was different. When I got home from work, they ran up to my car and asked if I had anything 'interesting' to eat in my house.

"Don't you have anything interesting at your own house?"

"Nothing good."

"Not my problem. Go away!"

I hurried into my house to fix dinner before I ran out to pick up my daughter, but as soon as I shut the door they started knocking.

I chose to ignore them and hoped they would go away, but they opened my door and came in. After several minutes of me trying to get them to understand that it's rude to walk into people's homes and even ruder...(ruder? more rude? One of those) to not leave when told to, I finally got them out the door. If I knew their parents better I would have physically removed them.

Once I got them outside, I locked the door. They immediately started knocking and trying to turn the doorknob. I tried to ignore them, but they never stopped beating on the door and yelling for me to come out. These kids have been awful at taking hints in the past, but tonight was the worst I'd ever seen them. They didn't let up until I left thirty minutes later. I don't know what happened after that.

Tomorrow, I am going to the tractor supply store to purchase an electric fence. Have I ever said that I hate kids?

  1. You must be some sort of Pied Piper. Does your charm work on animals or just little kids?

    1. According to Red I have the same effect on animals. I sit in my yard to read and skunks come and sit under my chair.

  2. Man. I would be all friendly to the parents JUST until the point that I knew them well enough to say:

"Your monster spawn are a nagging plague of attempted break-and-entry in this neighborhood. For god's sake, call them off!"

    1. I may have to do that, but that would involve having to talk to even more people. It's a fine line. They might start to think we are friends or something.

  3. You should molest them, just to teach them a lesson.

    Too far?

    1. I can't even think of a witty comeback to that without feeling like I have crossed a line. I'll just say, "Thank you for the suggestion, but NO."

  4. Not to be a downer, but we had a similar situation...our neighbor's daughter just comes over anytime. At first I thought it was rude and she was a little shit but then quickly realized she really wasn't trying to be rude, her parents never paid attention to her, fed her late at night and never healthy and well, the weren't parents in my opinion. So instead of going down the whole DSS road, we invited her into our lives, this way we know she has someone who gives he attention and nutrition.

Check out the kid's living situation...just saying.

    1. I get where you're coming from. I really can't speak to their home life since I don't know the family. I also don't have a problem with these kids. Last night was just especially annoying.

There is a reason they like me. I give them attention like I do all kids. I joke on this blog that I don't like kids, but it's not really true. Plus, they are drawn to me for some reason.

I am happy to be a positive influence for kids that I come in contact with, but am selfish enough that I only want to do it on my time.

  5. I had a situation similar to Kevin's, but sometimes you can't be a full on surrogate parent all the time. Teaching them to respect other people and their boundaries is also an important and necessary life lesson as people they encounter in their lives will be less likely to get the crap annoyed out of them at the incessant and obnoxious need for attention. Kids with shitty living conditions have it rough, yes, but that doesn't make their bad behavior any less annoying. Acknowledge you like them as tiny people and firmly kick their butts out of your house if you aren't in the mood for it.

    1. That's what last night came to. They have been allowed in in the past, but have a difficult time understand proper boundaries. However, they are quite young. I'm not mean to them and am happy to entertain them when I have the time, but last night I was pressed to get a few things done in a short period of time and didn't have the time for them.

I need to explain to them what my expectations and limitations are and then hold them to it.

  6. Oh no. Perhaps it's time to speak to the parents, whether you know them or not.

It isn't okay for kids to just walk into a person's house. I'm sure they mean no harm, but there are boundaries.

    1. You're right. Luckily, last nights extreme is rare. I have to decide how much I want to put up with.

  7. You know I repel kids. Whenever I'm there I never see them... until this last time when one of the other kids asked, "Is that your girlfriend?" ...but notice she didn't ask it when I was there. So just keep me around more!

    I'm like a scarecrow...for kids. I'm a scare-kid. I think I have another blogpost as soon as I get wifi back.

    1. That is true. However, I don't let then in even when I am in a more hospitable mood. I go outside to them.
