Where Can You Talk to a Wall and Not Look Like an Idiot

Several years ago, I discovered MySpace and my online life completely changed. With time, I switched over to Facebook and really started spending time online. As we all know, Facebook has revolutionized the way people use the internet to communicate. We are in contact with each other in ways previously unimagined, but is it too much?

Before I get started, I want to make it clear from the beginning that this is NOT an anti-Facebook or anti-social media post. I may stray into the anti-stupidity realm, but that is the fault of our education system and poor parenting skills. Facebook and Twitter are just the places that stupidity gets displayed.

There are many social media sites out there, but I will be concentrating on Facebook.

Like many people, I have appreciated being able to reconnect with old friends and family, but in most circumstances, the reunion was a letdown. After the quick "Hey, what's up?" it's over and now you're stuck with another friend on your friend list that you will never talk to. Sure, you can delete him, but then you feel like an idiot for adding him to begin with. What did you think was going to happen? Did you expect to pick up right where you left off as soon as he saw that friend request?

People grow apart and move on. It's part of life and it's okay. Was it really that big of deal that you haven't spoken with the kid that used to eat glue since you left junior high? Had it kept you up nights knowing that the Latino kid who was in your class for one semester of your 4th grade year may have gotten married since then and you have never seen a picture of his kids?

Once again, I am not saying Facebook is bad, but the ease of being able to find people allows us to entertain unhealthy obsessions. Who hasn't looked up an old boyfriend/girlfriend just to see what they are up to? No friend request. Just a creepy look through their pictures and a few of their status updates. This is also done regularly with the kid that bullied you in school, that girl/boy who you never asked out but always wanted to, that nasty person you hated, your old boss, or the guy/girl you just met on Friday night. It has become commonplace, but is actually really creepy.

It is very useful for staying in closer contact with people you already communicate with. It is wonderful to be able to just crank out a quick message on your keyboard to someone and know that they will get the message within a few hours. I use it to communicate with church members, school officials, my daughter (that's sad), other bloggers and various other friends. I have no idea how many messages I send and receive in a single day, but Facebook is easily my main source of communication. If Facebook were to ever crash, millions of people would have to tweet to each other about the lack of Facebook access. Until it came back up, teenage girls all over the world would have no place to upload the pictures of themselves in their bathroom mirrors.

Despite our obvious dependency, it is very useful and I have no intention of giving it up. Many great causes have been brought to light by Facebook users. It is by far the easiest way to send out invitations for an event. Grandparents several states (or countries) away can see the latest pictures of the grandkids. People use Facebook to announce engagements, births, anniversaries and various other pieces of celebratory news. It is also useful for when the news isn't so cheerful. I have learned of funerals by reading my Wall. Many news stories have been brought to my attention because I saw it on Facebook. This is even how I learned that my neighbor's house had burned down. It happened while I was sleeping and I read it on Facebook before I stepped outside that morning.

However useful this immediate access to information may be, that does not mean that everything on Facebook is useful or even needs to be shared. Twenty years ago, if a woman was mad at her husband, she would call her mother or a girlfriend and gripe to them about was a no good, lazy bum he was. Today, they can crank out a quick status update to display his shortcomings to the world. I have seen this on countless occasions from both men and women.

Some people post the link to every music video they watch on Youtube. They post endlessly about every step their baby takes and when s/he poops. The people we like to avoid because they can't talk about anything besides their latest illness or medication they have been prescribed invade our walls with persistent posts about their doctor visit and the aches and pain they experienced when they last vomited.

Recent FACEBOOK thoughts:

I understand that Facebook may have therapeutic value in helping you to get things off your chest, but maybe, just maybe, the reason your kids are driving you nuts is because they are hungry and waiting for you to get off Facebook and fix dinner.

Thank you for the picture of the cute thing your kitten did today. It is so much cuter than the 15 you posted yesterday.

Your dinner tonight is really good? I don't believe you. Oh, you posted a picture. Now I have no choice.

I am so sorry that I thought you were about to commit suicide and sent the cops to your place. It's my fault for not being familiar with current music and realizing that you were just expressing yourself through song lyrics.

Girls, that duck lips face that you are making at the camera is NOT attractive. I don't know who told you that it was or why after seeing the picture you choose to post it anyway, but STOP IT.

I would love to comment or like your most recent update, but your lack of punctuation, capitalization and properly spelled words prevents me from being able to understand what you are trying to say. At the very least, use a period to show me where one sentence ends and the next begins.

ENGLISH: It's your native tongue. LEARN IT!!!

I know I kind of got off on a tangent there, but those things had to be said. Facebook and other social media is great and has only begun to be used to it's potential. However, not all information needs to be put out there. The ease of use has caused many people to forget where the lines of decency are. A good portion of the next generation does not even have that filter. Every thought is fair game to be thrown out to the world. We are connected in marvelous ways that could not have been imagined just a few years ago, but it is possible to be too connected.

  1. I'm not on Facebook - just because it's fun to say I'm not on Facebook.

    Not really.

But I do experience a certain thrill of satisfaction when a *cool* guy asks me if I'm on it and I get to say no.

I'm sorry. I can't help it. It's one of my guilty pleasures.

    4. You should add a condescending 'pfft' when asked, to make it clear that Facebook is beneath you.

I still have a few friends that are hold outs and never got an account. I have a VERY FEW who had an account and somehow walked away.

  2. I have been kind of sick of Facebook lately. I took a short break, but then jumped back in. I, admittedly, am too active; I post too many pictures, check-in too many places, etc., etc., but I do that for certain people. I have those friends that I would like to delete, but then I'd feel stupid for adding them in the first place.

I love it for so many reasons. My parents both refuse to get Facebook. Then they're upset when my second cousin once removed who lives three states away calls them with news about my life.

Ups and downs ... to me more ups than downs, but definitely a not-so-new frontier that we're still discovering.

    Excellent post! :)

    1. You captured the spelling thing. Drives me nuts. I will be a little forgiving of the teenagers that do it, because it is just one of the stupid things they do to be cool, but adults that mash their entire update into one long run on sentence that takes me 90 seconds to decipher and I am still not sure what they are saying have no excuse. How hard would it be to include a period at the end of a sentence?

I got into Mafia Wars for a while. I eventually realized that no matter how well you did, you could only spend money on property, which was used for making more money. That extra money could only be spent on more property which would make you more money faster. It was an endless cycle with no point.

  4. I have found the best tactic (thank YOU) is just to post random funny things interspersed with actual life-moments that might interest/amuse those who know me.

I do not feel guilty unfriending people. I only do it if we are not actually communicating even by status/comment. I never let my friend list exceed 200. And I can honestly say I have never looked up an ex. The past is the past. You're (the ex) out of my life, and I no longer care what happens to you. ...cold? or realistic?

And it was kind of annoying when I was actually talking to my sister 3 years ago and she suddenly asked if I had seen her status update a couple weeks prior. She was pregnant, announced it on fb and assumed the world would find out.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The thing with your sister is part of the break down in actual communication that is happening because of social media. I found out my daughter was dating by stumbling across her relationship status and we live in the same house! We, myself included, have thrown things on Facebook or Twitter and then have the mindset that everyone knows now.

As for the funny stuff, as long as you laugh, I don't care if anyone else even sees it.

I actually know couples like the above picture who talk to each other on FB while in the same room. So sad.

Oh, and it's called DUCK FACE, not fish face. Geez, Brett, get your terminology right, would ya?

I'm about done with the whole FB thing. I hardly ever post, and when I do, it's something very interesting or entertaining (I hope, anyway). I avoid the "I'm tired" "I'm hungry" "I'm so mad I could spit" (translation: look at me!! Ask me what's wrong!!) vaguebooking type posts.

Then again, that is for my personal FB page. I have another page for the blog with my pseudonym, where I do in fact post when I put up a new blog post or occassionally chat with other bloggers ("friends" on that FB page) or pass around silly pictures. I'm enjoying my Misty's Laws FB page because I only have about 25 people on there, and they are fellow bloggers that I really enjoy. And they either post funny comics, silly statuses or things about their life that are relatively entertaining. I think that's sort of how it's meant to be, no?

  6. I'm a fond user of facebook. If it wasn't for facebook, i probably wouldn't have a blog right now. I don't even mind the new timeline.

  12. Coming from a slightly younger generation (but raised properly), I don't feel like I belong sometimes. Of course I am guilty of talking about my kid and occasionally posting about what I ate. But, I was taught as a young person what is appropriate to talk about and what isn't. The one that kills me the most is when people talk about their relationship issues in a public forum... I mean, really?! How is this going to HELP your relationship in any way? All you are doing is further embarrassing your significant other and yourself. There is such a thing as the telephone. You can text or call someone to discuss private issues with someone you trust to give you good advice.

I also agree with the spelling and grammar. It kills me that no one my age can speak online without using "texting language". When you're on a computer, you can use E's in the words which require them.

  21. I'm on Facebook every day. But I only post once or twice a week. I approve anyone I know or went to school with as long as they aren't someone I hate. But I have my feed divided in lists.

    Family - obviously my family.
Current Friends - Again Obvious, but I also add classmates that I talk back and forth with on facebook.
Classmates - this is where I stick everyone who I don't really follow and they probably don't follow me. But I went to school with them.

I check the family and current friends daily. I couldn't tell you the last time I checked the classmates lists.

I tend to lose "friends" when they do the stuff you posted about above because I'm a smart ass. If I'm close or "real life" friends, I won't say anything. But if I'm not, I usually respond accordingly, then next thing you know, I'm no longer friends. It helps keep the feeds down.

    3. I do block applications and games the first time I see them. I've been doing that one for over a year. It seemed that 90% of my Wall was taken by these games I had no intention of ever playing. Two clicks and they are gone.

    1. I have just started on Twitter in the last few months and love it. I never use it on my computer so I don't see the asinine things from people that I don;t care about. I have the ones I really want to see sent to my phone. It works so much better.

  40. *** the reason your kids are driving you nuts is because they are hungry and waiting for you to get off Facebook and fix dinner***

Fabulous, interesting, sad, & hiiiiilareous post.

    1. Thank you. I have the same issue with dinner. I will start it cooking and then get distracted by my computer. Sometimes Facebook, sometimes other things. It is a huge weakness of mine.

  41. Great post! I don't use FB a ton other than to promote my blog and I mainly do that on my fan page. I'm OD'ing on Twitter though! And the combination of all the social media tools is kind of killing me. Trying to work out some limits.

    1. I don't spend the time on them that I used to. I pre-plan most of my status updates and tweets. Any time I write a post, I set up automatic updates to drop the links into social media. I don't have to do it later that way. The automated systems make it so much easier.

    1. Thank you. People drive me nuts on Facebook and most other places that I have to interact with them. I will be back.

    1. I have given my share of snarky replies, but I don't think I did this one. I am much meaner in my head.

  44. I am SO glad you linked this up for FTSF- this post is so well written and I found myself nodding along with all your points. Then, by the end, I was laughing myself silly. The suicide/cops bit and the Duck Lips ones were hysterical!

    1. Thank you. I think most people have seen these things. I assume they get as irritated about them as I do.

  45. This post was fantastic. I laughed out loud so many times I had to reread it out loud to the husband because he wanted to know what was so funny. My favorite part was your "recent Facebook thoughts." I have thought every single one of those!

    1. Thank you. I had fun with this one. I wrote this over a year ago and my opinions about it are still the same.

  46. So right about the let-down after the initial rush of finding a long-lost high-school love. And haha to the kitten being adorable because you couldn't tell from the 15 kitten photos yesterday. Ditto with maybe your kids are whiny because you're on facebook rather than feeding them. Awesome post.

    1. Luckily, I've had my account long enough that I don't get excited about finding someone like I used to. I send a friend request and whatever happens happens. I have little expectation anymore.
