Apparently, Not Everything Is About Me

I have been really busy the last few weeks. Nothing particularly interesting, just busy. So when I sat down to write, I had to search my memory for a bit to decide what to write about. I eventually came up with something, but want to share a couple of pictures first.

A few days ago I was visiting my friend Brad's house. His son Bradyn was running around the house doing what 2 year olds do. Screaming, laughing and throwing things at the guest. After an hour or so, he began to slow down and sat to watch TV. He curled up in a chair with a doll and was very quiet.

As I got up to leave, I got my first good look at the doll.

His dad says it's Braydyn's favorite and sleeps with it every night. Brad had bought it at a haunted house a few years ago and Bradyn took a liking to it. Brad and his wife eventually decided to just let him have it.

Bradyn plays with trucks and blocks the same as other boys his age, but the nipple-pierced demon is his favorite toy. I will be keeping my eye on this kid.

For this next picture, I don't have any story, it just really caught my eye.

A pink Mustang. I'm still not sure how I feel about that.

The new school year started last week. Kirsten and I both had a great summer and hated to see it come to an end. However, it has ended and it is time to get back to work. As Kirsten was getting ready for her day, I ran out to the mailbox. In the way back, I noticed some bright colors on the steps by our side door. Since I had not yet put in my contacts, I couldn't tell what it was, but knew it was out of place.

From about 20 feet away, I saw that it was a vase of roses. Now, I am not really a big fan of flowers, but a huge smile immediately came to my face.

In the few seconds it took me to retrieve them, my mind went through a series of thoughts.

WOW! Red sent me flowers! She is so awesome. I love her.

Wait, she's still looking for work and money has been tight, so I doubt she would spend her money this way. Plus, she usually puts more thought into her gifts. I don't think she would send flowers even if she was sending a gift.

These are on the steps of my side door and it is only 7:30 in the morning. A flower company did not deliver these. It must be someone local.

Have I done something nice for someone lately and they want to say thank you?

Do I have a secret admirer?

It wouldn't matter who it was. I am very happy with Red, but it would be flattering. Who sent me these flowers?

I grabbed the flowers and pulled out the card to settle my racing mind.

KIRSTEY? WHAT?!?

It hadn't occurred to me for even a moment that they could have been for someone else. I'm not the only person in this house. Am I really so arrogant, that I could only conceive of the gift being mine. Well, I am that arrogant, but that's not really the point.

I have written in past posts about my daughter dating, but I guess the reality of it isn't really at the forefront of my mind. I have accepted it, but am not really used to it yet.

    1. I love it. My kids had a monster doll when they were little, but it wasn't as creepy as that one.

    1. Lily - what do you think of replacing your avatar of Spawn with that doll? I think it totally fits. Laughed my ass off at this post, Brett!

    2. I'm glad other people like it as well. Bradyn loves it and won't let it go.

      Marriane, thank you.

  4. Doll, super creepy...obviously a two year old is braver than me.

And the flowers! So sweet of this Charles guy. And it's really cute that you thought they were for you :)

    1. I guess at his age, he has watched all the scary movies and learned about how messed up this world is yet. He doesn't know it's supposed to be creepy.

Charles is a good guy, but he never sends me flowers.

  5. hahahaha That doll was soooo creepy (and ironically as I'm typing this, a commercial for that new movie The Possession is playing on TV...)

  6. Haha Brett, I'm really growing a liking for this guy. Good for him.

And regarding that first photo... it reminds me of me when I was a little kid. I went to a fair with my mom and sisters and I won first prize for something or another. And I got to pick out of a bin of huge stuffed animals and prizes. But the prize I chose was not one of the huge stuffed animals, but instead a rubber fly (like the bug) about a foot long and a foot wide.

    1. I've seen the toy flies and other bugs, but I don't think I have seen one that big. What would you do with it?

  7. I'm afraid of the dark so that doll would have to go if it were in my house. The two year old is super cute, though.

Sounds like Charles is sweet and had no idea his card would be on the internet for millions of viewers like me.

The car reminds me of Mary Kay...ughhh.

    1. My cousin had a small Renaissance clown that made this evil laugh when you shook it. It was the creepiest thing I have ever seen. She was terrified of it and they had to keep it in the back of the closet.

I haven't told Charles about this post, so I don't know if he has seen it or not.

  8. That doll...no actually I don't have anything to say about it after all. Except that kids are funny.

The car, however looks like it was doused in Pepto.

    1. Muscle cars just shouldn't be pink. I'm not really a car guy, but it just seemed wrong.

  9. Was Barbie driving the car?

I would never send you flowers. I'm trying to find out if there's anything like a bacon-gram that delivers in your area. THAT, I would do.

btw, totally awesome business idea. You should run with that.

    1. I didn't get a look at the driver, but the car really stood out.

Thank you for not sending flowers. While I would appreciate the gesture, I am not really a flowers guy. That bacon gram idea sounds wonderful, but it has been done. Half Bakery.

  12. Those are very lovely flowers and a sweet gesture. That Charles is a good kid. I never ever got flowers from any boy when I was in HS. Heck, I didn't even get flowers until I met my husband. He is very thoughtful for a college boy.

    1. He is a very good kid. She hasn't seen him for almost month since he left for school. She is trying to keep the flowers for when he comes back, but they aren't looking so good today.

  13. When I was a kid, I watched this scary movie about some sort of shrunken tribal doll that came to life in someones house and terrorized them. It looked a lot like that doll (minus the nipple ring) and freaked me out a lot. That doll brought back all of those freaky memories.

    pink mustang......um, ya,that doesn't seem right.

    1. Trilogy of Terror (1975)

One of those cheesy horror movies. Cheaply made with awful special effects, but very creepy. They even did a Made-for-TV sequel in 1996.

      I love bad horror movies.

    2. Wow! Good call on the movie. You've impressed me with your knowledge. I didn't even know what the movie was called.

  14. What a prince! I received flowers once, very long ago. They were from the supermarket. I know this because they were still in the bag. All class.

    1. I think this was the first time she has received flowers. It left an impression on her.

If someone was going to get me something from the supermarket, I would rather have a candy bar.
